Born and raised in Walla Walla, Tye began his involvement in photography in junior high and went on to work on the Wa-Hi Yearbook as a staff photographer. During his service in the Navy in California, Viet Nam and Japan, his duties included some photography.
When he returned to Walla Walla from the Navy, he found employment in Tallman’s Camera Department, where he worked for 23 years, with 20 of those as manager of the department. In 1997, recruited and motivated by Lori Montgomery, he and several others became members of a revitalized Walla Walla camera club called Blue Mountain Photo Club. In 2005 he was elected Vice Chair of the Columbia Council of Camera Clubs & served two terms before being elected to the position of Chairman for 4Cs. He introduced and developed the Electronic Imaging Division for both the BMPC and the 4Cs, which remains a vital part of competitions for both organizations today.
Over the years Tye has been honored with a variety of awards, including “Print of the Year” for 4Cs, Top 80 in Slide Competition, and Top 10 in the Best of the NW Challenge.
